Nella scultura proposta dall’Associazione Carta…pestando cinque persone di età diversa, a rappresentare l’umanità intera, felici tornano ad essere colorate. Perdono quindi il grigiore dei due anni tristi e terribili vissuti dalla pandemia e di recente portati dagli scenari di guerra, per tornare a vivere a ridere, e a festeggiare il Carnevale. È un guardare al passato con la voglia di ripartire quella dell’associazione di cartapestai guidati dal maestro Pinuccio Nardelli e dall’artista Diego Simone. Eppure, la pioggia di colore non coinvolge proprio tutti i personaggi raffigurati, nel mezzo c’è anche un uomo triste e che resta grigio, il suo volto è quello di Vladimir Putin, Presidente della Russia e principale responsabile dell’aggressione militare all’Ucraina. Il Carnevale di Putignano è anche questo, la capacità dei maestri cartapestai di dare risalto a tematiche importanti e di stretta attualità attraverso la satira.
I pupazzi in cartapesta diventano quindi il mezzo per lanciare messaggi, sensibilizzare, accendere i riflettori anche su temi scomodi.
In questa scultura il volto di Putin sarà l’unico a rimanere grigio, l’unico risparmiato dalla pioggia di colore e vita.
Cenni storici e aneddoti
La satira politica è strettamente legata alla tradizione del Carnevale di Putignano, sin dal rito delle Propaggini in cui i teatranti vestiti da contadini salgono sul palco per prendersi gioco delle autorità cittadine denunciando, in rima e fra le risate, le malefatte dell’anno. E la satira politica negli anni delle grandi sfilate dei carri allegorici ha anche preso le sembianze di pupi in cartapesta raffiguranti i più influenti politici nazionali ed internazionali, proprio come il Putin proposto in questa installazione dell’associazione Carta…pestando.
Caricature perfette realizzate con semplice carta di giornale, colla, acqua e farina. Personaggi politici che hanno nelle loro mani le sorti del mondo sono rese pupazzi di cartapesta a troneggiare sui maestosi carri allegorici.
L’attualità è stata protagonista di Putignano sin dalle origini. Il primo carro, realizzato nel 1936, raffigurava un elefante, che sotto mentite spoglie rappresentava le vittoriose imprese coloniali dell’Italia. Era un carro ancora molto semplice nella forma e nei materiali, ma già ingegnoso: non solo prevedeva il movimento della proboscide, ma anche la presenza di alcuni bambini nella pancia dell’animale che, attraverso il nasone, soffiavano coriandoli sugli spettatori. Due anni dopo, fu realizzato il carro “U purch i u nust” (il maiale è nostro), un chiaro riferimento alla conquista dell’Abissinia e al futuro prospero che attendeva il nascente “Impero”. Vicino al carro, lo stesso autore vestiva i panni di macellaio e tirava fuori dal ventre del maiale salsicce e salumi vari. Fu il primo carro di gradi dimensioni che durante la sfilata nel centro storico si incastrò nelle stradine costringendo il corte a deviare il percorso all’esterno delle mura storiche. La satira politica è stata poi assoluta protagonista dei carri di Putignano soprattutto fra il 1980 e il 2000.

In the sculpture proposed by Association “Carta…pestando”, five persons of different ages, representing humanity, are happy going back to colour. Therefore they lose the greyness of the two sad and terrible years of the pandemic and recently by the images of war, to go back to laugh and live, and celebrate Carnival.
It is a way of looking back at the past with the will to start again that the Association led by paper-mâché craftsman Pinuccio Nardelli and artist Diego Simone want to convey. However, the colourful rain does not involve all of the represented characters. In the middle there is a sad man that remains grey, his face is that of Vladimir Putin, Russia’s President responsible for the military aggression against Ukraine. The Carnevale di Putignano represents this as well, the capability of the craftsmen to emphasise important themes of current events through satire.
The paper-mâché puppets then become the means to send messages, raise awareness, and shine the spotlight even on uneasy themes.
In this sculpture, Putin’s face will be the only one remaining grey, the only one spared by the rain of colour and life.
Historical hints and anecdotes
Political satire is strictly linked to the tradition of the Carnevale di Putignano, since the tradition of Propaggine where actors dressed in farmers’ clothes and make fun of the town authorities through rhyme and laughter of the past years mistakes. In the years of the big parades, the political satire has also been characterised by paper-mâché puppets representing the most influential national and international politicians, such as Putin in this installation by Association “Carta…pestando”.
Perfect caricatures that are realised with simple newspaper, glue, water and flour. Political characters that hold the world’s future in their hands are made into paper-mâché puppets throning over these majestic parade floats.
Representing current events has been a characteristic of the Carnevale di Putignano since its origins. The first parade float realised in 1936 represented an elephant which, in disguise, symbolised the victorious imperialistic endeavours of Italy. It was a very simple float in shape and materials used, but already ingenious. It didn’t only involve the movement of the trunk, but it also included children hidden in the animal’s belly throwing confetti at the audience through the big nose. Two years after, the float “U purch i u nust” (the pig is ours) was made. A clear reference to the conquest of Abyssinia and the prosperous future of the birthing “Empire”. Next to the float, the same author was dressed like a butcher pulling out sausages and different cured meats. It was the first float of big dimensions getting stuck in the narrow roads of the historical centre, forcing the crowd to deviate the path to the outside of the historical walls. The political satire has been the absolute protagonist of Putignano’s floats ever since, mostly between 1980-2000.
