Come le sirene sono in grado di ammaliare i naviganti così il Carnevale ha la capacità di “ammaliare” gli abitanti di Putignano e coloro che hanno il piacere di scoprirlo e viverlo.
Il proverbio associato al Carnevale, derivato dall’antico detto latino “semel in anno licet insanire” (una volta l’anno è lecito impazzire) la dice lunga su questa festa che ha origini antichissime.
L’Associazione “Conlemani” ha dedicato la sua scultura ad uno dei primi carri realizzati del maestro cartapestaio Angelo Loperfido. Dopo tanti anni nelle Botteghe del Carnevale come allievo prima, Loperfido tenta la strada da maestro cartapestaio in prima fila e su una delle sue prime creazioni troneggia proprio una sirena ammaliante e ammaliatrice.
La sua creazione è quindi un omaggio alla cartapesta e al Carnevale, ricordando le sue origini, ma è anche un omaggio al Carnevale e alla sua vocazione ammaliatrice nei confronti di chi vive la festa da attore o come spettatore.
Cenni storici e aneddoti
Nelle Botteghe della Cartapesta di generazione in generazione si tramanda un’arte antica e suggestiva, quella della cartapesta e del Carnevale. Colla, farina e carta di giornale creano l’arte che veste le sfilate del Carnevale di Putignano. In quelli un tempo semplicemente chiamati “capannoni” bambini e ragazzi apprendevano i segreti del mestiere fino a presentarsi alla sfilata firmando un carro in concorso.
Una scuola d’arte fatta di passione spontanea guidata dai Maestri della cartapesta.
Eppure una scuola della cartapesta istituzionalizzata a Putignano c’era ed era il vanto della comunità cittadina. Precisamente nel 1961 nacque la Scuola di Cartapesta e Ceramica promossa dall’ente Meridionale di Cultura Popolare della Regione Puglia. Ad insegnare alle giovani leve della cartapesta erano nomi riconosciuti e apprezzati del Carnevale di Putignano: il maestro Angelo Trizio e il prof. Giuseppe Basile. E nel 1965 e nel 1966 la scuola partecipò anche al concorso ufficiale del Carnevale di Putignano con un proprio carro allegorico.

Description
Just as mermaids can charm sailors, the Carnival can “charm” Putignano inhabitants and those who have the pleasure of discovering the festival.
The saying associated with Carnival, which is derived from the ancient Latin saying “semel in anno licet insanire” (once a year you can be crazy) says a lot about this festival that has ancient origins.
The Association “Conlemani” has dedicated its sculpture to one of the first parades floats made by paper-mâché craftsman Angelo Loperfido. After many years in the workshops as a student first, Loperfido attempts his shot at paper-mâché craftsman in the first row and in one of his very first works a mermaid sits enthroned charming and charmer.
His creation is, therefore, a homage to the paper-mâché and Carnival, remembering his origins, but it is also a homage to the Carnival and its charming vocation towards festival actors or spectators.
Historical hints and anecdotes
In the paper-mâché workshops, the ancient and suggestive art of paper-mâché and Carnival has been passed down from generation to generation. Glue, flour and newspaper create art that dresses the parade of the Carnevale di Putignano. In those known as “capannoni” (lit. warehouse) children and apprentices learn the secrets of the job until they present themselves at the parade signing off a float.

Yet, there was an institutionalised academy of paper-mâché in Putignano and it was the pride and joy of the community. Precisely, it was born in 1961 and promoted by the Southern Popular Culture authority in the Puglia region. The teachers were renowned and respected names of the Carnevale di Putignano: craftsman Angelo Trizio and prof Giuseppe Basile. Between 1965 and 1966 the academy also took part in the parade floats competition presenting their own float.
